about

This track was written and recorded in December 2020, as part of the DePaul Humanities Center "Sickness and Solitude" project.

lyrics

I.
Fourteen and feeling strange
Metamorphosis gone sideways
I was sick they said
From a tick they said
Cover my eyes with cobwebs
Like the kid from the comics
An encounter with an arachnid
Left me with superpowers
But my superpower
Was obliterating weakness
My tarot card inverted
Spreading out
A counselor at the dialysis clinic
Said there’s no cure there is only treatment
So casually dispatching
The silence of the organs

II.
As Galway said:
"Living brings you to death
There is no other road"
The one thing that is certain
Makes you feel so uncertain
And the one thing we have in common
It makes you feel so all alone
The house is on fire
I was hiding behind the curtains
What did I ever do to deserve this?
There’s no consent for being born

III.
Now it’s crowded in the sickbed
Everybody’s clawing the dirty mattress
Just wait a bit
You’ll get used to it
Get to know your impotence
Some will dance a rain dance
To drive away the cloud of sickness
It doesn’t work
But when it doesn’t work
You can just blame the performance
And there’s the fatal dumb indifference
Of the mask-less man at the supermarket
Doesn’t care if I live
Doesn’t care if I die
He’s made a virtue of being selfish
He wants to fuck my feelings
Go on then
Fuck away

IV.
Come on now it could be easy
Put the gun down
Just trust me
There’s no escaping
But there’s quiet
And there’s mercy
You can’t live forever
But you can live for good
The only thing that’s certain
It makes you feel so uncertain
And the only thing in common
Makes us feel so all alone
The fever’s getting higher
We couldn’t find the doctor
He’s with the patient under the covers
They’re keeping each other warm
